In 1513, explorer Ponce de Leon landed ashore a barrier island on the southwest coast of Florida, which was inhabited by the Calusa Indians since around 500BC. Over time the island was visited by Europeans, slave traders, pirates, and Seminole Indians. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, the origional settlers of modern-day Sanibel arrived on the island.Their efforts and sacrifices greatly contributed to the growlth and rich history of Sanibel as we now know it.

The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today.
