Edison Ford is Preparing for Hurricane Season

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 31, 2016) -- Employees at Edison & Ford Winter Estates have started the annual site preparation for hurricane season that starts June 1 and runs through November 30.

All estate homes and buildings will have hurricane shutters installed, porch furniture in vulnerable locations will be moved inside and Mina Edison's piano will be moved from the guest house to the museum. If there is a hurricane watch or warning, the antique cars will be removed from the site and taken to an offsite storage facility.

Care is also taken to protect the historic gardens. Horticulturists and landscaping specialists will conduct stormscaping to minimize damage to all trees and shrubs in the event of a hurricane. Detailed records are documented, including inventory and photographs of plants and trees prior to any storms.

In the event of rain, Edison Ford will continue normal tour operations; however, visitors are advised to bring umbrellas or other rain gear. If there is lightning within a 10-mile radius or severe weather warnings, Edison Ford will close the river side of the property and suspend tours of the grounds. Guests may remain in the museum and lab until weather threats have passed. The entire site will close if there is a hurricane warning.

Visitors are advised to call Edison Ford prior to arriving if weather conditions are not favorable. For more information, call 239-334-7419 or visit www.edisonfordwinterestates.org
