Edison & Ford Winter Estates Programs – December 2012
Throughout the month of December there are special activities planned for Edison & Ford Holiday Nights as well as the daily offerings of tours of the historic homes, gardens and museum. Nightly Holiday Traditions Tours with site historians are at 6 and 7 p.m. and NEW Holiday Behind the Scene Tours with Curators are on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. as well as a variety of programs and events that include:
Edison & Ford Holiday Nights through December 30
Holiday tradition continues with Edison & Ford Holiday Nights, a Southwest Florida 37 year annual event. The winter homes and gardens of the Edison and Ford families have been seasonally decorated. Guided tours are at 6 and 7 p.m. (special ticket price); and NEW Behind the Scenes Tours are on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. (special ticket price). The newly restored Edison Botanic Research Lab and Museum are open every night. Nightly performances by students and community groups at 7 p.m. are free to the public. Discounted rates are available to groups of 20 or more with advance reservations. Cost: adults $15, children ages 6 -12 $1, Edison Ford Members FREE. ___________________________
Santa Visits Edison Ford, December 8, 11, 14, 16, and 21, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Children and their families are welcome to visit Santa at the Edison Ford during the season in the Children’s Tree Trail located in the public Heritage Garden which is free to the public.
Garden Talk: Plants for the Holidays, December 8, 9 a.m.
Holiday plants are popular gifts to give and receive and many of the plants will continue to grow in South Florida gardens blooming throughout the year. Christmas cactus, poinsettias, staghorn ferns, roses and orchids are a few of the plants thriving at Edison Ford after the holidays. Join horticulturists and learn how to continue growing these wonderful year round plants as well as tips and ways to use your blooms to decorate for the holidays. Cost: Edison Ford Members FREE; non-members $5. Participants will receive 20% off in the Edison Ford Garden Shoppe.
Edison Ford Monthly Volunteer Meeting, December 11, 9:30 a.m.
Edison Ford volunteers will meet at the Edison Caretaker’s House for Holiday refreshments, social time and a tour of the decorations by Curator staff who have worked with dozens of decorators to recreate the history of the holidays with Edison and Ford.
Meeting is open to current Edison Ford volunteers as well as prospective volunteers.
Island Hopping Holiday Cruise, December 15, 11 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Captiva Holiday Village meets Merry Matlacha and Edison Ford for an Island Hopping Cruise and tour with Captiva Cruises departing Captiva Island to Lovegrove Gallery & Gardens in Matlacha to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers as well as return cruise to enjoy holiday lights along the Caloosahatchee that can be seen only by boat. Cruise includes lunch and dinner, historic walking tour of Matlacha, Edison Ford, and Holiday Nights. Cost: $135 per person. For reservations call 239-334-7419.
Edison Ford Artists & Authors Nights, December 16, 4 – 8 p.m.
Looking for the perfect gift for the person on your list who has everything? Edison Ford Artists and Authors will personalize artwork and books for a one-of-a-kind gift. Participants will sample great foods sold in the Edison Ford retail stores including chocolates, jams, jellies, fruit tea and more. Edison Ford Members are FREE; shopper’s passes will be issued at the Edison Ford ticket office for non-members.
Homeschool: Simple Machines, December 17 or 21, 9:30 – 11:30 (students grades 1 -6)
Homeschool students will see how “things” work with simple machines and their uses in industrial processes. Students and their parents can enroll in a two hour program with curriculum that follows the Next Generation Florida Sunshine State Standards. Pre-visit curriculum materials will be emailed to registered families. Registration required. Edison Ford Members $10; non-members $20 (one adult, one child) additional $10 per child.
Emerging Inventors: Super Sound, December 20, 9 – 10:30 a.m.
Emerging Inventors Early Learners class for one – three year old children and their parents, grandparents or other family members and includes socializing with others, education activities, story time, singing, crafts and exploring the homes, gardens and museum at the Edison Ford. Edison Ford Members $5, non-members $15 (one adult, one child), additional $5 per child.
